It’s hard to believe that with this issue we will be one year old! Twelve issues under our belts and many more on the way.
Robin and I owe a great deal to all of the wonderful people who have helped us accomplish what we have so far. Most importantly, our wonderful editor, Tracy Marcynzsyn, without whom none of this would have been possible; she has helped us shape the content of Conejo Valley Lifestyle so we could fulfill our editorial mission and bring meaningful articles to our readers.

New Orleans

New Orleans 6

We all know about New Orleans’ recent history: devastation in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, followed by an ongoing story of what can only be described as a miraculous recovery. The losses from Katrina in property damage and, more importantly, of life and terrible displacement were unimaginable. The recovery that a visitor sees, both physically and in terms of the spirit of the people of New Orleans is truly inspiring and amazing. In short, NOLA is back!!

Do You Still Need an “A-B” Trust?

First, what is an “A-B” Trust? Up until a few years ago, it was a very popular way to take advantage of both spouses’ estate tax exemption and pass along a larger share of assets to their beneficiaries.
Let’s take the case of John and Mary Smith. They’re married, have a net worth of $20 million, and a decade or so ago they set up a living trust that, upon the first death, turns into a pair of sub-trusts (“A” and “B”). These Parks Are for the Dogs! 15

Community dog lovers recently celebrated the official opening of three new neighborhood off-leash areas (OLAs) with a unique ribbon-cutting ceremony. Two dogs “volunteered” to hold the ribbon, while others participated in a game of chase over, under and around the ribbon holders. A mega ball toss featured 20 dogs chasing tennis balls thrown at the same time, and a beginner’s agility course provided an opportunity for dogs to try the sport.

When you’re looking for a place to retreat for an afternoon or an entire weekend, Ojai is your answer. Less than an hour’s drive from the Conejo Valley, Ojai is a hidden jewel of a town, cradled by the Topatopa Mountains in a picturesque valley. First named Ojai, aka “Valley of the Moon,” by the Chumash Indians, Ojai’s natural beauty attracts artistic types of all sorts who find peace and solace in this mountain paradise. Natural hot springs, breathtaking hiking trails and year-round waterfalls make Ojai a Shangri-La of sorts, which explains why Frank Capra aptly chose the town as the idyllic setting in his famous 1937 movie, “Lost Horizon.”
