Pristine and picturesque, the Sherwood Country Club sits nestled at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains, serving as a premier golf and gathering site for several hundred members. Its world-class golf course has hosted nationally ranked players and professional tournaments, including the PGA TOUR, and its grounds have been the setting for movies, including “Tarzan,” “Birth of a Nation,” “Robin Hood” and “Bridesmaids.”
Beyond its exquisite beauty and grandeur, the Sherwood Country Club rests on a foundation full of heart, known as Sherwood Cares. Formed by Club members to create an avenue for charitable giving, the Sherwood Country Club Charitable Foundation, Sherwood Cares, was established as a nonprofit 501(c)3 charitable organization in 2013.
“The success of the Foundation has been phenomenal,” said Foundation Board of Directors President George Carney. “We have been so fortunate to have our members become actively involved in all aspects of creating an organization that truly sends the message that Sherwood does care.”
On a Mission
With the mission of “Serving children and families in our community by supporting programs that address educational, medical, nutrition and safety needs,” the Foundation began accepting grant applications from local charities in 2015. Since that time, the Foundation has generously donated $150,000 to 15 local charities, including Many Mansions, Casa Pacifica, the Conejo Free Clinic and Food Share.
The Foundation accepts grant applications in two cycles annually—January/February and July/August. Local charities are invited to visit SherwoodCares.org.
The nonprofit is supported by Sherwood Country Club volunteers committed to running the Foundation, reviewing grant applications and organizing fundraising activities. The Foundation’s major annual fundraiser, Sherwood Cares Tennis Tournament, Evening Gala and Golf Classic takes place in May, and additional fundraising events include the Malamut Automotive Museum Tour, Sunset at Sherwood, and Sip, Taste & Treat.
Currently, Sherwood Cares is preparing for professional golf’s return to Sherwood Country Club in October at the PowerShares QQQ Championship. Sherwood Cares has partnered with PGA TOUR Champions to become the Official Charity Partner of the tournament, which will provide new opportunities to give back to the local community and grow the involvement and success of the Foundation as a whole.
To promote charity, tournament officials have announced a “Buy Now, Give Back” initiative for the 2016 event. For every Daily Grounds ticket purchased by Oct. 17, the PowerShares QQQ Championship will donate a ticket to local charities through the Sherwood Cares Foundation.
“PGA TOUR Champions has been dedicated to giving back locally and those values are reflected in all of our actions,” Carney said. “We are grateful to be a part of this fantastic event.”
The PowerShares QQQ Championship will be the first of three events in the inaugural Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs to determine the season-long Charles Schwab Cup champion, followed by the Dominion Charity Classic and the Charles Schwab Cup Championship. The top 72 players will compete in the PowerShares QQQ Championship for a $2 million purse, before a smaller field moves on to the Dominion Charity Classic and finally the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
“In this inaugural year of the PowerShares QQQ Championship, we look forward to developing our relationship and creating an enhanced benefit for deserving charities in the greater Thousand Oaks area,” said Executive Director of the PowerShares QQQ Championship O.D. Vincent. “With Sherwood Cares as our partner, we will be linked to those many committed members of the community who are dedicated to giving. We want both the members of Sherwood and the community to enjoy and be proud of this wonderful tournament.”
“Charity is embedded in our culture, the foundation on which we build relationships, how we give back to the local community and what we feel is the right way to do business,” added PGA TOUR Champions President Greg McLaughlin. “We couldn’t ask for a better partnership than with Sherwood Cares, and all that they do for children and families here. We know that by partnering with them, they’re offering support on a multitude of levels and we’re humbled to be able to have a hand in helping.”
