Nearly 300 residents, staff and special guests attended University Village Thousand Oaks’ 10th anniversary celebration which honored the first people to sign up for University Village, the first couple to move in and a host of original residents who have been at University Village since its opening in 2007.
Master of Ceremonies and UVTO resident Frank Welch kicked off the program and introduced speakers from University Village senior management, including Executive Director Ryan Exline, Manager Bob Bouchard, Marketing Director Ernie Sandlin and Managing Partner for Continuing Life Warren Spieker. Dr. R. Stephen Wheatly with California Lutheran University also spoke about the symbiotic, positive relationship between the residents of UVTO and the students on campus.
“You attend our games and concerts and bring your applause and enthusiasm,” Wheatly remarked to the residents. “We’ve gained as much from you as hopefully you’ve received from us.”
Spieker recognized Siri Eliason and Evelyn Ballsun, the first residents to make a deposit to live at University Village a few years before the community opened.
“Thank you for taking the original plunge and for getting it started,” Spieker said.
Sandlin also introduced Jerry and Lois Friss, 10-year residents who were the first to move into the community.
Ginger Detterman, current chair of the University Village Resident Council, introduced past chairs as well as the current council. Also singled out for recognition were residents who have donated their photography talents and resident volunteers who assist with activities, newsletters, hospitality and numerous clubs and programs on campus. The anniversary program ended with a lighthearted video created by resident Tom Simondi which captured the 10-year history of the community.
A sumptuous anniversary dinner was served that evening. Residents also received a memory book featuring a collection of residents’ memories and tributes to UVTO residents.
