Nearly 600 people gathered at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library to honor veterans and service men and women serving in the Afghanistan War at the 6th Annual Military Tribute Gala, chaired by Rosemary Allison, Coldwell Banker realtor and proud “Medal of Honor” event sponsor with For The Troops, a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization that sends care packages to members of the U.S. Military serving abroad.
Gala attendees raised $150,000 to support For The Troops, while enjoying an evening featuring dinner, live and silent auctions, entertainment by Melissa Manchester, a moving color guard display, and a testimonial from Captain Brick Conners, USN (retired), about the great joy he felt in receiving a “We Care” package while deployed. Event sponsors included Logix Federal Credit Union, Gold Coast Health Plan, Amgen, HSP Direct, Rosemary Allison, Coldwell Banker Realtor, Union Bank and Frazier Aviation.
“Knowing that we are supporting the young men and women who are fighting for our freedoms that we take for granted,” drives Rosemary and a team of dedicated volunteers to donate their time and efforts to help this organization.
“We contribute our part and stand with those enlisted soldiers, who dedicate their lives to keeping our loved ones out of harm’s way,” says Rosemary. “Every day there are between 15 to 45 volunteers who help at For The Troops’ headquarters, not including the very generous public who drop off donations to be included in our ‘We Care’ packages,” adds Rosemary, noting that For The Troops collects, prepares and packages care packages Mondays through Thursdays and Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to noon, shipping about 1,800 boxes to deployed soldiers each month.
To date, For The Troops has sent over 192,000 “We Care” packages containing necessities, goodies and games to soldiers serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Kuwait, Africa and other deployed locations. Care packages containing useful items like socks, aspirin, pens and paper, toothpaste and food or snacks, such as peanut butter, applesauce, trail mix and more, brighten soldiers’ lives when they’re away from home serving their country in a foreign land.
“Our recipients love being remembered and appreciated for the sacrifices they make for us,” says Rosemary, whose nephew serves in the Marines. For The Troops founder, Paula Cornell, is married to a Vietnam Veteran who served in the 101st Airborne during 1968-1969 and is a Bronze Star Recipient.
In addition to the annual Gala event, For The Troops hosts an Annual Heroes’ Golf Tournament to support soldiers and raise needed funds. The tournament will be held at the Wood Ranch Golf Club on Monday July 9, 2018. For information about the Golf Tournament, contact Golf@ForTheTroops.org or call 805.306.0830.
“Being a Medal of Honor sponsor of this gallant enterprise provides a sense that we are helping to bring some home comforts to those who are defending our nation,” says Rosemary, acknowledging the sacrifices made by millions of families serving abroad to protect our country.
