The Cabrillo Music Theatre’s newly relaunched 2016-2017 season opens with the revolutionary Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical “Evita,” produced for the first time by the local nonprofit theatre company.
Playing Oct. 14-23, “Evita” tells the story of Argentina’s controversial First Lady through a dynamic score of songs, including “Buenos Aries,” “High Flying, Adored,” “Another Suitcase in Another Hall,” and the famous “Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina.”
This incredible seven Tony Award-winning musical is not the only exciting award-winning first for Cabrillo Music Theatre this season. The talented and passionate Will North joins Cabrillo Music Theatre as its Managing Director following the recent company relaunch, which also included new staff and board leadership and a relaunched 2016-2017 season of shows.
In his new role as Managing Director, North brings 20 years of experience gained as an actor-director involved in all aspects of theatre production to Cabrillo Music Theatre. A long-time member of the Cabrillo Family, North received plenty of support from Cabrillo Music Theatre’s newly-expanded Board of Directors. New members Iona Blackwell, James Engel, Courtney Herring, Paige Loter, Alexis Peraino and Neil Ticktin join existing Board Chair Bart Leininger, Vice-Chair Ray Mastrovito, Secretary Cindy Murray and Treasurer Peter Tompkins, as well as Peter Mogg and Paul Panico. Artistic Director Lewis Wilkenfeld steps down after 10 years in the position, taking a role on the Executive Advisory Board.
“I am very excited about Cabrillo’s future prospects,” says Leininger, Chairman of Cabrillo Music Theatre’s Board of Directors. “Over the last few months, we have created new energy within Cabrillo. We have doubled the size of our Board with individuals with new ideas and perspective and have hired Will North, our new Managing Director, who shares our core beliefs within Cabrillo,” he adds. “Cabrillo Music Theatre will continue to produce top quality shows, and expand its community outreach program, which I believe is second to none.”
An award-winning director (“Oklahoma,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Closer Than Ever,” “Guys And Dolls,” “No Exit”), North began his career as a performer, playing more than 100 roles on stages from New York City to Los Angeles, including the Cinderella Castle Stage at Disney World and the Celebrity Cruise ship Galaxy. With an MFA in Acting Pedagogy from the University of Alabama and a BFA in Musical Theatre from Jacksonville University, North has also performed in concert with Alexis Gershwin at Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood, and for several years as the male entertainer for the Miss Mississippi Pageant, in addition to appearing with several symphonies.
His extensive background as a technical director includes six years as the resident technical director/production manager of Marymount Los Angeles. North also worked in the business side of entertainment for the William Morris Agency, where he was involved in producing the Miss America Live telecast and reality show, the Duke of Edinburgh Award national ceremonies, and managing events for recording artist Mary Haskell.
Sharing Leininger’s enthusiasm for Cabrillo Music Theatre’s season of firsts, North is optimistic as he looks forward.
“Potential. This is the first word that comes to mind when I survey the talented artists and technicians, the hard-working, committed board members and staff, the supportive and enthusiastic community, and the beautiful Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza,” he says. “We begin this journey with a spectacular ’16-’17 season, starting with the winner of seven Tony awards, ‘Evita,’ which Cabrillo has never produced, continuing with ‘Sister Act’ based on the hilarious 1992 comedy, and concluding with the favorite of kids and adults everywhere, we will fly off to Neverland next summer in ‘Peter Pan.’”
